Answer
We have to know what is spiritual in order for us to be spiritual. Among Christians, to be spiritual is to gear our activities to be church centered. Take bible study, sing in the choir, shout amen to sermons, arrange church picnics, distribute tracks, feed the homeless, etc, are considered spiritual. But, we can do all these without either spirit or God. If it is so, then these are not spiritual. Then, what is spiritual?
Spirituality is not religiosity. In religiosity, people have the control. In spirituality, God has the control. We control powers. High volts electricity, cars, jet planes, bulldozers, etc will do things that we cannot do. But, we operate them and they are under our control. God is omnipotent. He has enormous powers. We like to tap them as we wanted. It will never happen; even though some fake it by themselves and the devil helps some others to fake it. This is the story of so many well known spiritual ministries. But, spiritual person is the one who God does his work through him/her. If I am doing the work of God by God, or by his Spirit, or by his Christ, which work I will not able to do otherwise, then I am spiritual.
Salvation and the word of God are spiritual. The main subject in the gospel is the kingdom of God and salvation of souls. But, people use it to teach health, wealth, and safety, which are earthy that pertained to the dust. Man was created from dust and he will return to dust. But, man is also created in the image of God. God is a Spirit and he has soul. The actual man is the soul and God put him in a house of dust. God gives him a spirit when he is born again, which is his second birth. But, man gives to his physical body, which is dust, the number one priority. Most of them do not know about their soul. Others do not even care for the spirit even though it is the life of the soul. They will never be born again.
Now, let me try to answer your question; “how to be spiritual?” We can desire spiritual things. But we cannot have it until and unless God gives it to us. God controls it. Then, how can I become spiritual? I have a body. If I am born a second time, that is if I am born again, I also have a spirit that God gives to me. It is God’s doing. Now, I am born of God. Now, I have a body of flesh and I have a body of spirit. In short, I have a flesh and I have a spirit. These two oppose each other, and desire opposite things. I am the soul caught in between these two, which are flesh and spirit. If I am a flesh man, I will obey the flesh even though I hear my spirit in my mind. Now I fit; “Rom 7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.” But, if I am a spiritual man, I obey the spirit and the next verse will fit me: “Rom 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” If this happens, I am an overcomer. I have overcome the flesh, the world, and the devil. Now, I am Spiritual.
However, Romans 8:1 appears simple, but it is not. Look at verse 13. “Rom 8:13 ... if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.” It is not my self control, but I have to do it through the Spirit. That is, I must be requesting God to mortify the deeds of my body until it is done and God has to do it for me. Why God is not doing it as soon as I ask him to do? Because he is God. He is my master and I am not his master. God decides by what the intent of my heart is. Not only that, there is a reward attached to it and God will wait until I sweat enough to deserve my reward. “1 Peter 5:10 ... the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.” You cannot become spiritual on your own. But you can suffer to walk in the Spirit with hope and faith in God and God will make you spiritual. “2 Thes 1:11 ... our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power:”
If we love God with reverential fear, we will obey God - We will stop sinning.
the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.
